Omnipod costs Australia 2026

Understanding Omnipod costs in Australia can be confusing, particularly if you are already familiar with traditional insulin pump systems. The Omnipod uses a monthly subscription model that gives you access to pods through the NDSS.

Unlike some traditional insulin pump systems, there is no large upfront pump purchase with Omnipod. Instead, the cost of accessing the technology is built into an ongoing monthly subscription arrangement.

What is Omnipod?

Omnipod is a tubeless insulin pump system that uses wearable Pods attached directly to the skin rather than infusion tubing. The Omnipod system currently uses a separate handheld controller to communicate with and control the Pod. In some countries, including the United States, phone app integration is also becoming available for compatible devices, although this functionality has not yet been released in Australia at the time of writing.

There are currently two main Omnipod systems in Australia:

Omnipod DASH

Omnipod DASH is a tubeless insulin pump without built in looping automation.

Omnipod 5

Omnipod 5 has closed loop which automatically adjusts insulin delivery using glucose readings from a CGM (continuous glucose monitor).

For many people, the appeal of Omnipod systems is the combination of tubeless wearability and simplified day-to-day management.

Why does the pricing seem confusing?

One of the reasons people find Omnipod pricing difficult to understand is that the Australian system does not have an upfront cost, instead it has a monthly subscription arrangement so that you can access NDSS for ongoing consumables.

This differs from some traditional pump systems, where the pump hardware is purchased upfront through private health insurance. With Omnipod, the structure can feel less like buying a single device and more like maintaining access to an ongoing pump ecosystem.

How does Omnipod access currently work?

Access to the Omnipod ecosystem in Australia currently uses a subscription style model.

Unlike some traditional insulin pump systems, there is no large upfront pump purchase. Instead, access to the Omnipod system is provided on an ongoing monthly basis through a subscription.

For some people, this may make insulin pump therapy financially accessible because it avoids the large upfront cost of purchasing a traditional insulin pump system without private health insurance.

Once registered within the Omnipod system, Pods can then be purchased separately through the NDSS at the standard co-payment rate through participating pharmacies.

Do you pay both the subscription and NDSS co-payment?

Yes, people without private health insurance will pay:

  • an ongoing Omnipod subscription or access cost
  • separate NDSS co-payments for Pods

Costs and access pathways can change over time, so it is important to check current information directly with providers and the NDSS - or talk to Sam!

What does the subscription pay for?

Many people initially feel unsure about what they are actually paying for.

The monthly subscription is not directly purchasing Pods. Instead, it provides ongoing access to the Omnipod system, which then allows Pods to be purchased separately through the NDSS at the standard co-payment rate.

What about private health insurance?

For people with eligible private health insurance, the Omnipod system access subscription cost may be covered through their health fund, depending on their level of cover and individual circumstances.

The separate NDSS co-payment for Pods is still payable and are mostly not covered by health funds because these are classified as consumeables.
